Top 10 Movies of the 21st Century


Trying to determine the best films of the 21st Century can be quite a challenge. After all, everyone has their own tastes and opinions when it comes to movies. Not to mention, there have been thousands and thousands of movies made since 2000. So, in this list, we will just give our opinion on the best movies of the 21st Century.


10. The Help

While female-centered roles do exist in Hollywood, not many of them have been as popular as “The Help”, staring Jessica Chastain and Ahna O’Reilly. There are several personalities portrayed throughout the movie that many people fell in love with. And let’s not forget that Viola Davis was given an Oscar nomination, despite only appearing in the movie for eight minutes. The movie has its juicy parts and will make for a very good watch.



9. The Dark Knight

Directed by Christopher Nolan, the Dark Knight is an incredible movie that was houses some incredible acting. For those who don’t know, it is about Batman and Harvey Dent, who both attempt to bring an end to the mob ruling Gotham, run into the Joker. Now, the Joker’s performance was unforgettable and Heath Ledger was nominated for a role despite his passing after the movie was produced. The Dark Knight is a non-stop thriller that will leave you wanting more all the way until the end.



8. Gladiator

Although Gladiator came out in 2000, it was obvious that this would be a movie that people would remember for a long time. Basically, it is about a Roman general who is betrayed by a corrupt emperor, who later has his family murdered. Seeking revenge, he makes his way back to Rome as a gladiator. First off, Russell Crowe is an amazing actor who shines like a star in this movie. The movie is incredibly intriguing and is definitely considered one of the better movies of the 21st Century.



7. The Village

Leave it to M. Night Shyamalan to leave people hanging until the end of a movie. In his movie “The Village”, he introduces his to a remote village that has a mysterious alliance with the creatures in the forest. Little do we know is that the leader of the village made up these stories in order to keep his people clueless to the fact that they are actually in the 21st Century. And as smart of a director as he is, Shyamalan doesn’t reveal this to us until the final 20 minutes or so of the movie. This one will really make your head twist, which is why it made its way onto number seven of this list.



6. Pirates of the Caribbean- Dead’s Man Chest

This movie is quite the thriller and houses a lot of talent. The movie is a sequel that is about Captain Jack Sparrow (played by Johnny Depp) who attempts to avoid paying off a debt that would force him to spend a lifetime aboard a ghostly vessel. The vessel is run by a legendary pirate who goes by the name of Davy Jones (played by Bill Nighy). And with the assistance of his friends- Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) – he embarks on a journey that will force him to face an odd love triangle and a terrifying sea creature. The movie is very entertaining for all ages and does have a good story line.



5. The Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings is a classic film that is about a boy named Froto who must destroy a ring that has the power to end the world. Little does he know, the ring is forces him into a crazed mindset which causes him to question his own morality. And all the while, he is being led by a creature named Smeagol, who only wants to keep the ring. And let’s not forget to mention that armies are moving in on each other and a massive war between good and evil is happening throughout the entire movie. The story line is good, the acting is great, and the movie will keep you glued in until the end.



4. Juno

Juno is probably one of the most “unknown famous” movies out there. Basically, it is about a 16-year old high school student named Juno MacGuff (played by Ellen Page) who discovers that she is going to have a baby with her longtime admirer. Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera). She almost has an abortion but instead decides that she would like to give the baby up for adoption. With help, she meets couples who own an expensive home and agree to take care of the baby. Little does she know, their relationship is in turmoil and she is forced to make some hard decisions when it comes time to let go of her baby.



3. Inception

Have you ever heard of a dream within a dream? How about a dream, within a dream, within a dream? Don’t worry, not a lot of people have heard of this either. However, this didn’t stop Christopher Nolan (the Director of The Dark Knight) from producing one of the best movies of all time- Inception. To put simply, this movie will leave your head spinning until the very end and most people would agree that it is in a class of its own. The acting is incredible (Leonardo DiCaprio plays the lead role) and the overall plot is genius. Prepare to be intrigued for almost two hours if you decide to watch Inception.



2. Titanic

Titanic is a beautiful love story that is based on a real event- the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. The movie was directed by James Cameron and it is one of the highest grossing films of all time. Leonardo DiCaprio also plays the lead role in this movie and is joined by actress Kate Winslet, who plays a wealthy passenger on the Titanic. Leonardo’s character, Jack Dawson is in love with Kate’s character (Rose) even though he is broke and had managed to make it onboard the Titanic by winning his ticket in a hand of poker. The movie is relatively long (close to three hours) and is a must-watch for anyone who hasn’t seen it.



1. Avatar

Avatar made its way onto number of the list for the simple reason that it is the highest grossing movie of all time. Let’s not also forget that it was directed by James Cameron (the director of Titanic). The movie is basically about a paraplegic man named Jake Sully, who lands on a moon called “Pandora”. His mission on the planet later becomes torn as he falls in love with one of the females of a local alien tribe. This movie is unforgettable for the simple fact that Cameron brings us into another world. The acting is amazing and you’ll be glued to your seat throughout the length of the film.
